A filling is a procedure designed to restore a tooth or teeth that have been damaged by decay back to their normal functions and shapes. For a filling, a dentist first removes the decayed tooth material, cleans the tooth and the affected area, then fills the cleaned cavity with one of many different filling materials.

By performing this procedure, the dentist closes the spaces where bacteria can enter, which also assists in preventing further decay in the tooth. Caught early enough, cavities can be treated easily and painlessly. If not treated decay can lead to tooth pain and/or infection, and the tooth would need root canal treatment or extraction.
